Morning : A part of the food culture in Kochi

In Kochi city, many cafes and shops have signs that read “モーニング” (lit., “morning”) in Japanese. This “morning” concept isn’t just unique to Kochi, but also exists in other parts of Japan with regional variations.

This time I introduce a one of nice Cafe in Kochi City.

The menu

“Breakfast” usually refers to a certain period of time between 6:00 AM (or even earlier) to around 11:00 AM or 11:30 AM, so I was quite surprised that Kochi “mornings” went from 8:00 AM all the way through to late afternoon (3:00 PM) in some places.

The interior featured a dimmed lighting and stylish vintage-looking furniture for a calm and relaxing café-like atmosphere.

I took a glance at the menu after sitting down and was taken by surprise at the price. For the amount of food and portion size, the price was very reasonable contrary to what I would find in cafés around places like Tokyo.

My other colleagues and I decided to order, and I finally settled on the “Hot Sandwich Morning” after some deliberation. For a total of 650 yen, the set comes with coffee, salad, two sandwiches (potato & egg filling), and yogurt. From the picture, the set looks like it may leave room, but it was actually a very hearty and satisfying meal.

For the lighter option, there is the “Casual Morning” set which my colleagues decided to order. For a total of 460 yen, this set comes with a thick cut of toast, boiled egg, coffee and salad. Even if you’re not a fan of coffee, you can substitute for other drinks listed at the bottom of the menu for an extra 50 yen.

If you’re one of those people who are looking for lighter meals, or just love breakfast food, then we recommend you try out Kochi’s “morning” culture!
