Expanding the Circle of Sakawa-cho Fair (Feb. 2nd ~ Mar. 10th)

Sakawa-cho is a town located to the west of Kochi city. It is not only the hometown of Dr. Tomitaro Makino (also known as the “Father of Japanese Botany” for his research and extensive work in Botany) but is also an important cultural and historical site in Kochi prefecture.

In order to promote the culture and history of Sakawa, the town is holding an event centered on the concept of “Expanding the Circle of Sakawa-cho,” which consists of a series of activities that will let participants experience the charms of the town and interact with locals. There are a total of 11 fun activities ranging from making your own tea blend, weaving, to making plastic food samples. Today, we’ll be introducing two of the activities.

①Walking Tour through a Colony of Five Leaf Goldthread (Flower)
Let the future Dr. Makino be your guide through a field of flowers!

Participants of this walking tour will be able to enjoy a walk through a field of Five Leaf Goldthread, a tiny flower loved by the “Father of Japanese Botany,” Dr. Tomitaro Makino. Also known as the “flower of love,” the flower is equally adored and protected by citizens of Kamo village, and can be seen blooming in the sunlight shining through thick canopy of trees in early spring. This walking tour will span a total of 4km.

Leading the tour will be a little elementary school guide dressed up as Dr. Tomitaro Makino himself. After the tour, participants can look forward to “Imoni,” taro and meat soup made out of local ingredients!
